Organizing for your future and the future of your business

As we start a new year, we often look back to see where we have been and look forward and wonder where we can go. As we reflect on what has been, let’s also look at where we might go.  Although it is good to be satisfied with our accomplishments, we don’t want to become stagnant.

To create your future you must first be able to envision it.  Start by looking at the various areas of your business including your staff, your clients, the type of work you do, the areas you work in and anything else about your business.   Now ask yourself what changes you want to see in your business.  Maybe you would like things to stay just the way they are.  If so, make sure you document all your policies and procedures so you can continue as you are going.  Perhaps you would like to see growth.  If so, ask yourself what kind of growth.  Do you want more projects, larger projects, or different types of work?  By defining what you like and don’t like about the way your business has been running you will be in a much better position to make the necessary changes.

An important aspect of creating your future is looking at what you are doing.  Are you satisfied with your own functions and responsibilities or are you ready to turn some of them over so you can create more challenges for yourself.  In looking at yourself, it is important to also look at your life style or the life style you desire.  Do you need or want more family time or perhaps time to enjoy some of your own interests or maybe even pursue that “adventure” that you always thought was impossible.
